“A city set on a mountain cannot be hidden. Nor do they light a lamp and then put it under a bushel basket; it is set on a lampstand, where it gives light to all in the house. Just so, your light must shine before others, that they may see your good deeds and glorify your heavenly Father." | Matthew 5:14-16
.
Salt and light are so ordinary—present in nearly every home, every meal, every sunrise—and yet, in Jesus’ hands, they become extraordinary images of the Christian life.
.
Light pierces every dark corner and dispels every clouded thought. Darkness is not chased away by shouting at it or wishing it gone. It only retreats when light appears. Christ’s light shines in and through us, not so that we can boast or draw attention to ourselves, but so that others may “see Your good works and give glory to your Father in heaven.” Each day, we should ask ourselves: Am I dimming my light out of fear, pride, or selfishness, or am I letting it shine to draw others closer to Christ?

When he saw the crowds, he went up the mountain, and after he had sat down, his disciples came to him. He began to teach them, saying: “Blessed are...” | Matthew 5:1-3
.
Today is the Fourth Sunday in Ordinary Time, with our Gospel reading recounting Jesus, after seeing His crowd of followers, sitting down and deciding to teach them. Jesus leads the people through a series of statements highlighting the blessings of divine happiness. One of these blessings reveals how deeply Jesus cares about and understands the nature of our human hearts. He desires our holiness so that we might share in the Father’s Kingdom with Him. According to Matthew, Jesus says, “Blessed are the clean of heart, for they will see God.” It is an act of humility to consider the cleanliness of our hearts.

He left Nazareth and went to live in Capernaum by the sea, in the region of Zebulun and Naphtali, that what had been said through Isaiah the prophet might be fulfilled: Land of Zebulun and land of Naphtali, the way to the sea, beyond the Jordan, Galilee of the Gentiles, the people who sit in darkness have seen a great light, on those dwelling in a land overshadowed by death light has arisen. | Matthew 4:13-16

John the Baptist saw Jesus coming toward him and said, “Behold, the Lamb of God, who takes away the sin of the world. He is the one of whom I said, ‘A man is coming after me who ranks ahead of me because he existed before me.’ I did not know him, but the reason why I came baptizing with water was that he might be made known to Israel.” | John 1:29-31

Jesus came from Galilee to John at the Jordan to be baptized by him. John tried to prevent him, saying, “I need to be baptized by you, and yet you are coming to me?” Jesus said to him in reply, “Allow it now, for thus it is fitting for us to fulfill all righteousness.” | Matthew 3:13-15

Today we celebrate the Baptism of the Lord.

During his final General Audience of the year, Pope Leo XIV expressed how this passing year has been filled by a series of strikingly different events. “Some of them joyful,” he said, “such as the pilgrimage of so many of the faithful on the occasion of the Holy Year; others painful, such as the passing of the late Pope Francis, and the scenarios of war that continue to convulse the planet.”
.
Before reciting the Te Deum prayer, the pope added that the Church calls believers to gather everything—joys and sufferings alike—before God, asking Him “to renew, in us and around us, in the coming days, the wonders of his grace and mercy.”

At Christmas, our focus turns to the newborn Child, who embodies for us all the hope and peace we seek. At Sacred Heart, that focus is enhanced by the work of many hands who assist the friars and staff throughout Advent and the Christmas season. Our gratitude to all who have labored for our celebrations of the Nativity of the Lord. #SacredHeartTPA #DOSPAdvent #DOSPChristmas
